Read Online Overcoming Rash Judgment On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. In front of him there was a man suffering from dropsy. Jesus spoke to the scholars of the law and Pharisees in reply, asking, “Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath or not?” Luke 14:1–3 Today, we can easily and confidently answer Jesus’ question: “Yes, it is lawful to cure on the Sabbath!” But the scholars of the Law and the Pharisees were unable or unwilling to answer that question. And when Jesus healed the man on the Sabbath of dropsy—a condition of swelling from fluid retention—they continued their silence. Why were they silent in the face of a miracle? The Finger of God When Jesus had driven out a demon, some of the crowd said: “By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he drives out demons.” Others, to test him, asked him for a sign from heaven. But he knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house. And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand?” Luke 11:15–18 The name Beelzebul is first found in 2 Kings 1, where it refers to a false god worshiped by the Philistines in Ekron. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” Luke 10:38–40 Why was Martha burdened with much serving? The Greek word translated as “burdened” literally suggests being dragged around or pulled in every direction.
